Schedules of Indian Constitution

What are the schedules of the Indian Constitution?

Schedules are basically tables which contains additional details that are not mentioned in the articles. Initially, Indian Constitution had 8 schedules. Later, four more schedules were added by different amendments. Hence, now there are 12 Schedules in the Constitution of India. Amendments by which these four schdeules were added are also mentioned below.

List of Schedules in Indian constitution are as:-

Features of Schedules

First Schedule It contains list of States and Union Territories as well as their territorial Jurisdiction.
Second Schedule

It contains provisions about allowances, privileges and emoluments of :

a) President of India
b) Governors of Indian States
c) Speaker & Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha
d) Chairman & Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha
e) Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assemblies of Indian States
f) Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Legislative Councils of the Indian States
g) Judges of Supreme Court
h) Judges of High Court
i) Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG)  

Third Schedule

It contains the forms of oath and affirmation for :

a) Union Ministers of India
b) State Ministers
c) Candidates for election to Parliament
d) Candidates  for election to State Legislature
e) Members of Parliament 
f) Members of State Legislatures
g) Supreme Court Judges
h) High Court Judges
i) Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)

Fourth Schedule It contains provisions for the allocation of seats for States and Union Territories in the Rajya Sabha.
Fifth Schedule It contains provisions for the administration and control of scheduled areas and scheduled tribes.
Sixth Schedule It contains provisions for the administration of tribal areas in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. Trick to learn : ATMM (Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram)
Seventh Schedule Division of powers between the Union and States. For this 3 lists are there i.e.
1) Union list
2) State list
3) Concurrent list
Eighth Schedule

It deals with the official languages recognized by the Constitution of India. Originally, it had 14 languages, but presently it had 22 languages:-
1) Assamese
2) Bengali
3) Bodo
4) Dogri (Dongri)
5) Gujarati
6) Hindi
7) Kannada
8) Kashmiri
9) Konkani
10) Mathili (Maithili)
11) Malayalam
12) Manipuri
13) Marathi
14) Nepali
15) Odia
16) Punjabi
17) Sanskrit
18) Santhali
19) Sindhi
20) Tamil
21) Telugu
22) Urdu

Note:
a) Sindhi was added by 21st amendment act of 1967.
b) Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were added by 71st amendment of 1992.
c) Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali were added by 92nd amendment act of 2003.
d) Oriya was renamed as ‘Odia’ by the 96th amendment act of 2011.

Ninth Schedule

It deals with acts and regulations of state legislature that deal with land reforms and abolition of the zamindari system. It also deals with the acts and regulations of the Parliament dealing with other matters.  

Note: This schedule was added by 1st Amendment Act 1951 to protect the laws included in it from judicial scrutiny on the ground of violation of fundamental rights. However, in 2007, the Supreme Court ruled that the laws included in this schedule after 24th April  1973, are now open to judicial review.  

Tenth Schedule It contains provisions relating to disqualification of the members of Parliament and State Legislatures on the ground of defection.  
Note: This schedule was added by the 52nd Amendment Act of 1985, also known as Anti-defection Law.  
Eleventh Schedule It contains provisions that specify the powers, authority and responsibilities of Panchayats. It has 29 matters.  
Note: This schedule was added by the 73rd Amendment Act of 1992.
Twelfth Schedule

It deals with the provisions that specify the powers, authority and responsibilities of Municipalities. It has 18 matters.  

Note: This schedule was added by the 74th Amendment Act of 1992.
