A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually fresh water flowing towards sea, ocean, lake or another river. Rivers are part of hydrological cycle. Here, we can learn about rivers of India and cities situated on their banks .
Rivers in India are manily classified into 3 categories like Himalayan rivers, Peninsular rivers and Inland drainage basin rivers.
1) Himalayan rivers :- These are the rivers which flow throughout the year thats why they are also called as Perennial rivers. These rivers cover a very long distance. These rivers have their origin in Himalayas like Ganga originates from Gangotri glacier at Gomukh of Himalayan range, Yamuna originates from Yamunotri glacier near Banderpooch, Uttarakhand. Brahmputra river originates from Chemayungdung glacier near Mansarover lake of Tibet. While, Indus river originates from Bokhar Chu glacier of Kailash mountains.
2) Peninsular rivers :- These rivers are not flowing through out the year thats why they are called as non-perennial rivers. These rivers cover a shorter distance as comparison to Himalayan rivers. So, we can say that a large number of peninsular rivers are seasonal as their flow depends upon amount of rainfall. These rivers have shallower course. Most of these rivers originate from Western ghats and flow towards Bay of Bengal, but Narmada and Tapi river flow towards Arabian sea.
3) Inland drainage basin :- Usually a river drains or ends in the sea, ocean but this is not the case with the Inland drainage basin. Here, the river do not directly end up in the ocean or sea instead it ends in an inland body like lake. Their streams dry up during summer while cause floods during heavy rainfall. Two main rivers that form inland drainage systema are Luni and Ghaggar. Inland drainage system mainly founds in Rajasthan.
