Fundamental duties in Indian constitution-with short trick

Fundamental Duties are defined as the moral obligations of all citizens to help promote a spirit of patriotism and to uphold the unity of India. Initially, our constitution does not have any of the fundamental duties. Later, 10 fundamental duties were added by 42nd constitution amendment act of 1976.

Further, 11th fundamental duty was addded by 86th Amendment Act 2002 in the constitution. Swaran Singh Committee in 1976 recommended fundamental duties, the necessity of which was felt during the internal emergency of 1975-77.

Fundamental duties in the Indian constitution are taken from the constitution of erstwhile USSR(Soviet Union).

These 11 duties are incorporated in the Part IV-A of the constitution under article 51A.

List of fundamental duties to be obeyed by every Indian citizen is given below:-

11 Fundamental duties  

51A(a) To abide by the Indian Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem.
51A(b) To cherish and follow the noble ideals that inspired the national struggle for freedom.  
51A(c) To uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.  
51A(d) To defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so.  
51A(e) To promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities and to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women.  
51A(f) To value and preserve the rich heritage of the country’s composite culture.  
51A(g) To protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures.  
51A(h) To develop scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform.  
51A(i) To safeguard public property and to abjure violence.  
51A(j) To strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.  
51A(k) To provide opportunities for education to his child or ward between the age of six and fourteen years.  

Significance of these duties:-

  1. They remind Indian citizens that while enjoying their rights, they also have a duty towards their country, society and fellow citizens.
  2. They warn citizens against the anti-national & anti-social activities like burning national flag, destroying public property and disrupt the sovereignty and integrity of India.
  3.  They create a feeling that citizens are also active participants in the realisation of national goals.
  4.  They promote sense of discipline and commitment among citizens and inspire them.
  5.  They also help the honourable courts in examining and determining the constitutional validity of a law.
